The 3 day development process will inform the development of a new production, POOL PIECE, which will be devised and rehearsed in June 2008.

The development process explored how we can use poetry, music, light and projection, rhythm and sounds, and the magic of water to connect with audiences with whom communication is conventionally considered difficult. Through a series of practical exercises and scratch performances, the team challenged the boundaries of interactive, multi-sensory performance, and, we hope, upset the apple cart of conventionally received wisdom.

The process focused on water-based work for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, for people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, for the very young and their parents/guardians, and also for older people affected by dementia and strokes. As well as working on the development of the ideas the artists were involved as participants, allowing them the opportunity to act as recipients of the multi-sensory experiences. The whole process was as hands on – and in the water – as we could make it!

Through an open application process, we were able to select 7 artists form the East of England. These artists came from a range of disciplines bringing with them different perspectives on the process. Click on the name of the artist to find out more about them.
